Comvita Firming Eye Gel review

Before I had even tried this Firming Eye Gel by Comvita, I was standing in my bathroom with the bottle in my hand when my boyfriend mumbled something about Mankua Honey being the latest Chinese obsession. Chinese people (and there are a billion of them – trust me, I’ve been shopping in Beijing) get obsessed about a lot of Australian/NZ things that are worth being obsessed with – wine and sheepskin boots being up there – so it should come as no surprise that they’re buying Mankua Honey like it’s going out of fashion.

Comvita (which is available at David Jones – more on that later) is a Kiwi skincare and wellness range which is chock full of Manuka Honey. “Miracle ingredient” gets thrown around a lot in the skincare industry but Manuka Honey really is all it’s cracked up to be and more. Comvita’s Firming Eye Cream has quickly made its way into the products I use every day.

Comvita use a unique kind of Manuka Honey called HUNI®XA which they’ve proven have extra benefits than ordinary than ordinary Manuka Honey. Here are some lovely factoids for you:

  • Research indicates that HUNI®XA™ Manuka honey supports the natural collagen and elastin structure of the skin by inhibiting MMP production (Matrix metalloproteinases), which is usually associated with collagen degradation, leading to skin sagging and wrinkling.
  • The phenolic compounds present in HUNI®XA™ Manuka honey inhibit the free radical activity, helping to support the skin structure, leaving it feeling firm and smooth to the touch.

Other benefits of HUNI®XA™ Manuka honey include:

  • Reduced inflammation
  • High anti-oxidant content
  • Promotes regeneration of the skin cells for wound healing
  • Anti-bacterial activity

Comvita has also recently been awarded a very prestigious organic certification – I can’t remember what it’s called but I’ll update this post when I find out.

In terms of the eye gel itself, the Comvita Firming Eye Gel has hyssop, saw palmetto fruit, sesame seed and argan kernel which I’ve noticed has reduced the puffiness around my eyes. It also controls oil – not that I need it around my eye are but I have been prone to the odd eyebrow pimple (gross). Over time it also smooths the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and also has something called mamaku extract and black tree fern which smooths and conditions the delicate skin around the eye area.

I’ve been using this for over a month now – twice daily.

What I love about this product is that I’ve found that for the most part, it has done what it said it will. I haven’t had any irritating browbone blemishes (seriously, am I the only one who gets this?) and even on days that I’m run down and exhausted, you can’t tell by the bags under my eyes because it’s not there. I also love the gel texture – it settles in right away and doesn’t feel dry or overly moisturising.

The downsides for me are twofold:

I’m disappointed that I haven’t seen any change at all with the one or two under eye wrinkles I have. It’s only been a month though and maybe these things take time but I’m not patient when it comes to fine lines. Seriously – I have fine lines?! What is happening with me???

The second thing is more petty. I find that even when I’m being careful, too much comes out of the pump. I end up using the excess as cuticle cream or layering too much on. The packaging could definitely be improved. Considering it’s only 15ml, I think I’ve wasted a lot by not being careful enough when pressing down.

Overall though, I really like this. When it runs out though, I’ll probably try Comvita’s Line Smoothing Eye Cream next because I’m scared to death of wrinkles.

For those of you who think you’re seeing things – Comvita’s Firming Eye Gel is the same price in the USAas it is in Australia. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen parity like this before. I feel like my world has just been turned upside down.
