Looking great doesn’t have to break the bank. If you’re on a small budget, you must know the tricks of the trade to ensure that you get the most of your hard-earned bucks. So, let’s scoop from shopping expert and author Kathryn Finney who’s devoted to helping women look fabulous on a budget.
- Find true fashion bargains.
There are lots of fun, cheap items to be found out there, but a true fashion bargain is not about the price. Do you know what should you be looking for in affordable women’s fashions? According to Finney, s true bargain is an item on sale that you would be willing to pay full price for. For instance, if you would normally pay $100 for a pair of jeans and find them at your local store for $25, then that is a bargain. If you would normally pay $200 for a nice wool coat and find one at your local for $35, then that is a bargain. Just look for things that are durable, of high quality and that will last.
- Know when to spend.
It’s a misconception that quality and cost always go hand in hand. Remember, you can find quality pieces on a budget and you never really have to pay full price. “You may want to spend money on things that make you money, meaning a nice interview suit or briefcase. You also want to spend money on things that have a resale value or you can hand down to loved ones, like watches or other jewelry,” says Finney.
- Quality counts.
Whenever you think of investing on something, remember that quality is just as important as quantity. “I actually do not have a ton of stuff in my closet, but I wear everything in my closet – everything. When something is worn out, that is when I buy something new,” says Finney.
- Know your budget and what you’re spending.
If you’re shopaholic or learning to make your small budget work, it’s important to shop wisely. Don’t swipe your credit cards without a second thought. “My tips for keeping your spending under wraps are pretty simple. Know what comes in and know what goes out. Actually sit down with your bank and credit card statements and look at your income and what you’re spending.” If you usually spend a huge amount of coffee, accessories, or trendy items in a month, think if you seriously need to spend that much on them, so you may cut it out and put the money into more important things.
- Shop smart with stores that save.
You may think of your favorite brick-and-mortar and online stores to find the best bargains. Just pick a favorite store with a discount, free shipping, and free returns. Kathryn Finney says she started from a love of fashion, but a lack of cash. “I was living well above my means, racking up over six figures in credit card and student loan debt. I started the blog in 2003 as a way to stay connected with friends and to chronicle my experiences getting out of debt,” she says. However, she managed to look fashionable on a budget and control her spending habits. By heeding these tricks, you’ll be able to look fabulous without blowing your budget.
