5 Travel Beauty Tips for Long Flights – Glam Radar

Travel Beauty Tips for Long Flights : As I mentioned the other day, I’m leaving on a jet plane very shortly and thought now would be the perfect time to share my long-haul flight skincare tips. If you’re anything like me, your face turns into a raisin at even the thought of hopping on a plane without some protection, so I wanted to let you in on my skincare flight secrets and product recommendations – they won’t break the bank either. We need that money for our holidays icon_wink-2-3

The flask from which all of my other advice is poured is my golden rule of flying: Hydrate.

Planes are full of the same, recycled dry air so even if your skin is an oil slick most days, planes will deplete you of any moisture you have.

Step 1: Don’t Wear Makeup. I know for some of you, having a naked face is just about as bad as being actually naked, but it really is the most important part. Makeup is there to make you look good and is a layer on top of your skin – when you’re flying and your skin is grabbing at anything and everything it can, makeup really does do more harm than good. You know how bad it is to sleep in your makeup? Wearing makeup on a plane is like that, but on steroids. To be honest, I don’t know how flight attendants do it, day in day out. If anyone knows, please tell me – I’m curious but too afraid to actually ask one.

Step 2: Moisturise. This includes your body and your face. If you can get away with it, try to double moisturise before getting on a flight. Once when you wake up, and if you can then moisturise again when you’re about to leave the house. I love Kiehl’s Creme de Corps (starting at $16 AUD) all over because it is thick and creamy. For your face you can use whatever moisturiser you’re currently loving as long as long as it’s not too thin.

Step 3: Protect. It may not have occurred to you, but if you love a window seat as much as I do, then you need to wear sunscreen. All over your face, all over your arms. Check out my two sunscreen posts (here and here) about what you should look for in a sunscreen. Trust me – you can definitely burn your skin while on a plane if you’re not careful. Not fun.

Leading into Step 4 and 5, I have to begin by sharing a little something with you all. Flying now isn’t like it was when we were kids and we could pack six bottles of water in our hand luggage. There are liquid limits (check your country specific websites for more information) but there are ways of getting around them if you want to bring some handy skin-healthy things on your flight with you.

Step 4: Cloth Masks. These are generally in a packet and are cotton face masks soaked in liquid so you can get away with packing 3-4 of them with you in your hand luggage. I love them because when the lights are off and everyone else is asleep, you can whip one out, put it on your face for 10-15 minutes and relax. Note: You will look scary and like a bit of an idiot so I wouldn’t recommend you do this while the lights are on and the random next to you is trying to watch Scream on his laptop.

My favourite cloth mask is by Scott Barnes (currently $29 for a pack of 6 on SN – I can’t find them anywhere else – might be discontinued?), but if you can get your mitts on a SK-II Facial Treatment Mask($100 AUD for a pack of 6) I think that’s worth a go. I generally use one every 5-6 hours, so if you have a 24 hour fight coming up like me, try to bring about 4 with you.

Step 5: Balms. Lip balms, cuticle balms, foot balms. These aren’t a liquid either, so you can put something like Burts Bees Honeysuckle Tinted Lip Balm ($14.95 AUD) in your bag without any dramas. Don’t forget about your nails and fee either! Burts Bees are again my favourites here, as they do a great Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme ($14.95 AUD) which doubles as a foot balm if you have cracked heels as well.

Phew! So those are my tips to make sure your skin stays supple and nice.

Some extra things to keep in mind when you’re flying:

  • Don’t drink alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates you and it will turn you into an even bigger prune. Not to mention, nobody likes a drunk person on a flight.
  • Drink lots of water. I always think that going to the bathroom 15 times in a flight is slightly annoying, but it’s worth it to have a bit of a walk around and stretch your legs. Aisle seats are handy if you have a weak bladder. Just sayin.
  • If you love OCC Lip Tars, keep them in your hand luggage. This is a random tip I picked up from a conversation with Rae Morris recently (oh yeah, we’re besties lol). Cabins are pressurised, and if you leave your collection of Lip Tars in your check-in baggage, they will explode. I’ve seen the evidence with my own eyes.

So that’s it from me – do you have any Travel Beauty Tips for Long Flights I’ve missed? I’m soaking up ideas like a sponge at the moment!
