Back in the day, if your hair wasn’t naturally straight, you would have to go to the salon and have a professional do it for you and the outcome would usually last you fairly a long time so that means you have to commit to the hairstyle for a while. Today, you can straighten your hair by yourself right in the comfort of your own home, thanks to companies like Babyliss, NuMe and GHD making hair straightening irons so easily accessible and available. Now, you can straighten your hair without the commitment and without spending a ton of money, too. If you like doing your hair by yourself, check out these tips for straightening your hair at home. It’s easy, sure, but you have to make sure you’re doing it right and not damaging your hair.

  • Find a tool with temp control – the temperature at which you straighten (or curl) your hair is important. You don’t want the temperature to go too high up that you end up frying your hair. This is an especially important feature to consider when buying a hair tool if you’re the kind who uses it on your hair every day. You’ll want to make sure that the temperature is no higher than 325 degrees.

  • Go for titanium – there are so many flat irons that you can get your hands on out there and while it may be tempting to reach for the cheapest one, it’s not exactly the best idea. The plates on a hair straightening iron can be made of different materials and, often, this is where the prices vary. Those with glass and metal plates are often the cheapest but they’re the worst kind for your hair as well. Ceramic is better for the hair and has been the hype for quite some time until titanium plates came into the picture. Titanium plates are best for your hair. They’re lightweight and they heat up very quickly so you don’t have to do each section multiple times which means less heat exposure for your locks.

  • Don’t forgo heat protectant – not using a heat protectant before exposing your hair to heat is one of the most common and most damaging mistakes a lot of women make. Heat protectant products are made to protect your hair from damage from heat. It prevents heat from burning and drying out your hair so it remains healthy and shiny. It also allows your hair to withstand higher levels of heat.

  • Give your hair a break – yes, I know, you need to look fab every day but try to give your hair a break from all the heat and damage and go a day without styling it using heating tools. There are so many hairstyles that you can do that does not require any tool at all so take advantage of those and let your hair relax for a full day or two every week.

  • Iron it dry – though there are hair irons that are marketed to be ‘okay for use on wet hair’, don’t. You can buy them but don’t use them on wet hair. It’s never a good idea, trust me. It’s convenient but it doesn’t mean it won’t damage your hair anymore. Ironing your hair wet is applying direct steam to it which is one of the most damaging things for your hair.
