7 Daily Beauty Routines You’re Probably Doing Wrong – Glam Radar

A healthy glowing skin might require some beauty routines to keep it radiant. However, slathering on fragrant lotions, going to bed with makeup on, and cleaning your face with a towel aren’t the best way to take care of your skin. Dermatologists reveal minor tweaks to your daily beauty habits that can save you money and time and result in smoother, younger-looking skin.

Oily skin is not necessarily bad as the natural oils produced by your face are necessary for maintaining your skin’s protective layer. If you usually love that tingling feeling after a wash, you’re not actually taking care of your skin as that tightness means your skin has been stripped of its natural oils. According to dermatologists, you should wash only once a day or twice and use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer.

  1. Applying sunscreen before applying makeup.

According to Los Angeles dermatologist Jessica Wu, you shouldn’t apply sunscreen before foundation. “If you use sunscreen first, and then you use an anti-aging product and then a moisturizer, and then makeup, you’re disturbing that sunscreen film,” she adds. Also, applying other products on top of sunscreen removes some of the SPF, so apply a thin layer of sunscreen 30 to your skin after you finish applying makeup.

  1. Depending on your makeup’s SPF for sun protection.

A tinted moisturizer or foundation with SPF is better than one that doesn’t offer sun protection, but most women don’t apply them adequately to protect themselves. Also, your makeup’s SPF may only protect you from UVB rays and not UVA rays that increase your skin cancer risk and aging.  According to experts, it’s better to apply both your SPF-containing cosmetic products and a separate broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

  1. Trusting an anti-aging cleanser to reverse the clock.

Though it’s natural to grab anything with an “anti-aging” label, keep in mind that cleansers don’t have the ability to turn back time. “Cleanser stays on your face for about six seconds—no anti-aging ingredient can affect your skin in six seconds,” says Boston dermatologist Ranella Hirsch. If you’re opting for an anti-aging product, resort to a moisturizer or an overnight retinol cream.

Though retinol boosts collagen production in the skin, heal blemishes, and reduce wrinkles, the product must be used in moderate doses. If you’re using more than a pea-sized amount of retinol, it can over-dry your skin. “If someone can tell you’re using a retinol—because you have red, flaky skin—you’re overusing it. Only if your skin can tolerate it, do it once a night,” says Dr. Gohara.

  1. Styling with mega hold hair spray.

If you need some hairspray to tame your strands, use light-hold hairsprays or hairsprays that substitute alcohol-based ingredients for organic oil-based ingredients since a sticky hair spray may weaken your locks over time. “These hairsprays are usually high in alcohol, which makes hair dry and brittle,” says a San Francisco dermatologist, Paradi Mirmirani. “Once you comb or brush your hair, that residue causes the hair to break and fall out.”

  1. Slathering on fragrant lotions.

Fragrant lotions, even seemingly natural products, have the potential to irritate your skin. “Fragrance is the No. 1 allergen in cosmetics and skin care,” says dermatologist Audrey Kunin. You might like your face to smell like roses, but that doesn’t mean your pores do. You may opt for lotions that are fragrance-free, sulfate-free, and paraben-free, which tend to be less irritating. By heeding these tricks, you’ll be able to keep your skin healthy and glowing from within.
