Mehron Celebre Professional HD Foundation Palette Review and Swatches

I’ve been a lurker in the blogging community for a while now, but until right now I’ve never actually contributed any posts myself.  Today marks my entry into the blogosphere!  I was inspired to take the plunge when I recently made a major beauty purchase for my freelance makeup artistry kit.

Mehron Celebre Professional HD Foundation Palette

I bought the Mehron Celebre Professional HD Foundation Palette.  I originally saw this product recommended on Kevin James Bennett’s In My Kit page (a great resource for aspiring or new makeup artists looking to round out their kit).  The shades are sold individually for $9.95 or you can buy the palette that contains all 20 shades of cream foundation for $189.95 at mehron.com.  If you’re like me, then you’re used to spending $25-$45 on foundation from brands like MAC and Make Up For Ever.  When I saw the tiny price tag on the Celebre Pro HD, my skepticism kicked in and had me wondering how well it could really perform.  I scoured the internet and, to my dismay, didn’t find a lot of guidance in the form of reviews.  So I decided to write my own and hopefully it’ll help somebody else out!

I love the packaging of this palette.  Each shade comes in its own twist-top pot, which keeps it clean and sanitary and prevents the product from drying out.  One thing that makes this palette so great for makeup artists is that if you run out of certain shades faster than others, you can just buy that shade individually for $9.95 and pop it into the empty slot in your palette.  The only drawback to the packaging is the size.  You get a lot of product in each pot and the result is a giant palette.  This thing measures approximately 10″ x 12.5″ x 1.5″ so it’s going to take up considerable real estate in your kit.  For me, it’s neater and more organized than 20 bottles of foundation,  so I don’t mind.  The 20 shades included cover a very wide range of skin tones.  I do think the palette may lack a perfect match for the deepest of skin tones, but it should work for the palest of the pale as well as for most women of color.

Now, on to the meat of the review.  Does it perform?  You bet it does.  I initially just planned to test the Celebre Pro HD for a week to familiarize myself with it, but I love it even more than my MAC Pro Longwear and I’ve officially stolen shade ME2 from my kit (good thing I can replace it for $9.95)!  It’s a buildable, full coverage, oil-free, unscented cream foundation with a satin finish that somehow manages to feel light and silky on skin.  I love the versatility of the cream formula.  You can it apply full strength for maximum coverage or sheer it out with primer or MAC Face and Body Mixing Medium.  I find that if I apply a very small amount and blend it out with the E.L.F Studio Powder Brush, I get beautiful medium coverage.  I set it with E.L.F. HD Powder and it stays put until I take it off at the end of the day.  I don’t seem to get as oily as usual either, but that can probably also be attributed to the weather cooling down here in Chicago.

My Recommendation:  I wholeheartedly recommend the palette for makeup artists.  I don’t think there’s a better product for the money out there right now.  For individual users, I’d say it’s definitely worth a shot!  I’ve spent more on a mediocre lunch than the price of a full individual pot of Celebre HD Pro.

EDIT 4/17/2011: I’ve been getting a lot of questions about this product, so I did a separate post here with before/after pictures of me wearing this foundation.  If you have a medium skin tone, it might help you with shade selection.

EDIT 7/09/2011: Mehron recently sent me some other goodies to review (primer, cream shadows, blushes, lip products, etc.).  They’ll be popping up on the blog throughout the week.  To see all of my Mehron reviews, click here.

EDIT 8/23/2011: Since I’m still getting a LOT of questions about shade selection and I think I’ve maxed out my ability to provide useful advice, I want to let everyone know that you can purchase samples for $3.99 each here. If you have any non shade-related questions, I’m happy to help!  And PLEASE, continue to help each other by posting in the comments if you do find your shade match!
