Lily.B Skincare Hydrating Serum Review – Glam Radar

by Maria · September 25, 2014

Hello everyone here is my Lily.B Skincare Hydrating Serum Review!

Okay. Well, I’ve written and re-written this post about 3 times the start of September. I’ve finally decided to just publish what I have so I can finally move on to other stuff, considering I really don’t have anything good to say about this product and want to get it done & over with. Oh, and I included a picture (from August 28th) so you can see what it did to my skin, too. (I get the urge to throw this serum against the wall every time I see that picture… except I’ve already thrown it in the trash.)

First, here are some blog post titles that were considered for this post, but were ultimately passed up:

  • I’ll Take “Things I’ll Never Use On My Face Again” for $800, Alex
  • Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark – The Lily.B Edition
  • Between Lily.B Hydrating Serum and a Room Filled With Spiders, I Choose The Latter

My skin went haywire in August and it’s taken most of September for it to start healing up, all due to this product.

At the end of July I was given an opportunity to provide my unbiased and honest review on a skin care product of my choice from SkinCareRX. The product I chose was Lily.B Red Tea Defense Booster Hydrating Serum (view on Lily.B’s site here; also, it’s not listed on SkinCareRX’s site but it is on Apothica here).

My Skin Type

My skin is both combination and acne-prone, and I easily can get post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. I do have sensitive skin. For the past year I had kept a fairly simply cleansing routine (black soap, moisturizer) which worked great for me… so I figured it would be okay to add a serum into my regime. If anything, I hoped it would give more luminosity and ‘glow’ to my skin.

The Lily.B Hydrating Serum

So, right at the start of August, I received the Lily.B Red Tea Defense Booster Hydrating Serum. It retails for $45.50 USD on Apothica, as well as Lily.B’s site, and you receive 1 fl oz of product.

Official description (from Lily.B’s site):
Formulated with the super-antioxidant, red tea, this lightweight yet concentrated serum targets dehydrated, stressed, sun damaged skin.

The anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activity of red tea will help improve skin tone and clarity while helping to reduce the signs of irritation.

Free from skin-irritating chemicals such as parabens, glycol, mineral oil, synthethic colors, and fragrance.

Endorsed by Dermatologists. Suitable for all skin types.

Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Hyaluronic Acid, Aspalathus Linearis (Red Tea) Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.

Surprisingly the ingredients are not listed on the Lily.B website, but they are on the Apothica website. The ingredients list I typed up in the “Official description” above is directly from the serum’s packaging itself. There aren’t a lot of ingredients. I am positive this product caused my skin to break out, because it is the only product I added to my routine, and when I stopped using it, my skin began to heal and go back to normal.

The serum has a plastic-y smell. The serum is clear and applies more watery than thick, is is not especially sticky. The product does not leave extra shininess to the skin, nor is it mattifying. After applying, there is not much slip or smoothness on the skin — it feels about how your skin was before application.

Results: I began to break out in small to medium bumps within days. At first, I attributed it to my skin just getting used to a product and figured my skin would go through a short period of this, and then get back to normal but with better skin tone and clarity, like the product claims it will do. After three weeks of using this product, I had to stop because I couldn’t take it anymore & it was not getting better.

The “After” Picture (from August 28th)

I apologize I don’t have any “Before” photos of my skin without any makeup on. I didn’t take any because I didn’t foresee me needing to.

This is a picture of me after a shower, so my face is freshly cleansed. I stopped using the serum around August 23rd. This was taken on August 28th, when my skin was starting to show improvement:

You can get a basic idea of what my skin looked like while using the serum, considering this is *five days after* I stopped using the serum.

You can see splotchiness, as well as redness specifically around the nose. The blemishes are a result of this serum, some are superficial surface blemishes, and others go a little deeper. Many of these left post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation on my skin. All of the work my Reviva-Labs Non-Chemical Face Peel had done in fading a lot of my pre-existing hyperpigmentation was basically lost thanks to this serum in the span of 3 weeks.

It’s now September 25th and because my skin heals pretty slow, it is almost back to how it was prior to using this awful product.

I had a bad experience with this product and would not recommend this to anyone with a skin type similar to mine. I honestly believe there are better serums on the market for a much more affordable price and would encourage you, if you are looking for a serum, to look at other serums.

Anyway, I’m glad to finally get this post done. This product is going under the “Never Again” category.
