How Clean is your Makeup? – Glam Radar

Like brushes, dirty makeup poses the risk of giving us spots and skin infections and being the OCD that I am, I didn’t like idea of such risks. About a year ago I happened to watch aYouTube video by makeup artist Wayne Goss, and he mentioned that he used Beauty So Clean products to sanitise his makeup kit. I love Wayne’s reviews, they are always honest so when he recommended this brand I decided to place an order.  Beauty So Clean is a makeup sanitising product line which include sprays and wipes. (I’ve quoted from the official website in parts, as it explains the idea behind the products succinctly)  Beauty So Clean: Cosmetic Sanitizer Mist Let me start off by saying that this spray is amaaaaaaazing! It’s designed to “remove bacteria and germs on (pressed) powder-based products.”  beauty-so-clean-cosmetic-sanitizer-mist-1 cosmetic-sanitizer-mist cosmetic-sanitizer-wipes-by-beauty-so-clean “Oils from your skin and skincare products ultimately wind up on the surfaces of your makeup, leaving bacteria behind – the results of this oil build-up (glazing) can be seen on the powder product.”  I personally have had this happen to my face powders and the glazing also acts as a barrier, so my makeup brush couldn’t pick up any product. I found that the spray mist really does work at removing any oil build-up. You only need to spray it once, with a distance of about 6 inches / 15 cm from the makeup surface for it to work effectively, too near and you can end up soaking it.  Beauty So Clean: Cosmetic Sanitizer Wipes The sanitiser wipes are designed to “remove bacteria and germs on lipgloss, lipstick, eye pencils, lip pencils, and mascara wands.” They can also be used on concealers, paint pots, and gel liners – basically any cream products. beauty-so-clean-cosmetic-sanitizer-wipes1-500x256-1 “When re-applying your lipstick or gloss after dining, food particles (and their bacteria) can get into your lip product and contaminate it. Lip-glosses with wand applicators are particularly risky; after application, bacteria from the lips can be pushed deep into the base, contaminating the entire product. The moisturising agents and oils in lipstick formulations can be the perfect breeding grounds for bacteria.” The wipes come in little sachets, and measure approximately 8 cm long (it’s folded in half in the above photo). I even keep a few in my handbag for on the go usage. Warning: if you happen to be wearing nail polish when using this product, be extra careful or make sure you wear plastic gloves, as I’ve found it also acts as a nail polish remover 🙁 Where can I buy them?BeautySoClean.com(BSC): the above items are part of their Professional line. They also offer a Retail line for non-makeup artists which is on a slightly cheaper price range (shame I didn’t know about this until now!) GuruMakeupEmporium (GME): based in London (Fulham). I purchased the spray and wipes from them and was very disappointed with the poor level of packaging that they had sent my goods in (a regular envelope which arrived totally battered!) especially considering the p&p they charge. I would recommend buying directly from the manufacturer. Spray (250ml): £15 from BSC and £22 from GME. The spray may seem expensive but it lasts ages. I’ve had mine for over a year now and still have about 80% left. Wipes (200): £15 from BSC and £21 from GME. The wipes are not as long lasting as the spray and you can end up getting through them quickly. I don’t think I will repurchase these.

  • Although it’s recommended that you use these sanitisers each time you apply your makeup, in practise, unless you’re a makeup artist, in which case it’s probably a prerequisite that you do so, I don’t think it’s truly necessary to be so stringent. I personally only tend to sanitise my makeup 2 to 3 times a week as I don’t have the time to keep it up every time I put on makeup, which happens to be most days of the week!
  • You really only need the spray mist as it can serve both functions of sanitising cream and powder products.
  • I thought I should also mention that another way to ensure your makeup remains clean is to always wash your hands prior to your makeup application thereby lowering the risk of further contamination. This is particularly important if you use your hands to apply foundations / concealers.
  • The same applies for your brushes. Beauty So Clean also do a sanitising spray specifically for makeup brushes, however I find that the spray mist works just as well for spot cleaning my brushes (of course you should still be deep cleaning your brushes once a week)!
