I really love the concept behind the fragrance library that Demeter has created, with help from absolutely amazing perfumer Christopher Brosius (creator of favourite brand of mine CB I Hate Perfume) they have managed to bottle almost every single smell imaginable, and are still creating more. Brosius is a master of synthetics with a nose for single notes and memories most of the scents in the Demeter Fragrance Library conjure up dreams from childhood, old flames or memories you thought you’d lost.
It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of vanilla/almond scents, that sweet marzipan smell takes me straight back to childhood where I would stuff my face with sweets (I was quite a… large child) and take comfort in the smell of cake baked by my grandma. Almond smells take me straight back to that time, it’s like getting a olfactory hug and a whisper in my ear of ‘everything is going to be alright’
I’ve always wanted to try Demeter’s Play-doh scent, there was a lot of hype around it when it was released because people seemed to think it unusual (that along with the ‘crayon’ smell that was also released) I on the other hand thought it was genius, who wouldn’t want themselves or their house to smell like their childhood pastime?
I took the plunge a little while ago and nabbed myself a bottle of their Play-doh scent online and it really is quite pleasant.
I wouldn’t say it was either feminine or masculine as a smell but it is incredibly creamy, if a little cloying. It’s also one of the strongest Demeter scents I’ve smelled (except for Christmas in New York but we won’t talk about that) and I’ve found it’s great to wear on a day when you just feel like you need a hug – you know those days when you wish you could just stay in bed. I wouldn’t say it smells exactly like the Play-doh I remember from childhood and I do think it could do with a touch more almond in the scent but it is pretty close and if anything it’s a more wearable scent than if it was exactly the same. I mean you wouldn’t wan’t people think you were just washing yourself using a children’s toy.
Overall it’s not a scent I would wear often, and I’m more likely to spray it around my home or onto a blanket when I’m feeling sorry for myself rather than for a night out getting drunk but it does accomplish what it sets out to and it does remind me of stuffing my face as a small child without worrying about the consequences. Such simple times.
